THE PRACTICAL VIEW

Treat inbox placement as a system of signals.

  • Start with your audience.
  • Keep the workflow understandable.
  • Automate repeatable moments.
  • Measure what changes a decision.
01

Deliverability is a chain, not a switch

Understand why some unsubscribes are healthy and when a rising rate points to a deeper mismatch. Inbox placement is shaped by several connected signals. Authentication, sender reputation, permission, bounce behavior, complaints and subscriber engagement all matter, and no single tactic can compensate for consistently poor sending habits.

For unsubscribes, look for trends across several sends before drawing conclusions. A single campaign can be distorted by topic, timing, audience mix or measurement limitations. Repeated patterns are more useful: rising complaints, persistent bounces, weakening clicks or a sudden change after a new acquisition source deserve investigation.

02

Permission is the strongest starting point

Send to people who knowingly asked to hear from you and make your identity obvious. Clear expectations at signup reduce the chance that a future message feels unfamiliar. Purchased or poorly sourced lists create problems that clever subject lines cannot solve.

For unsubscribes, the best choice is usually the one you can explain simply to the person receiving the email. Clear expectations, useful messages and sensible follow-up matter more than adding complexity for its own sake.

03

Keep the database healthy

Invalid addresses, repeated bounces and long-term disengagement deserve attention. List hygiene is not about deleting people simply because they missed a few messages; it is about recognizing patterns that signal poor data quality or lost interest.

04

Make leaving easy

An obvious unsubscribe option protects both the subscriber experience and the health of the program. Trying to trap uninterested readers tends to create worse outcomes, including complaints and negative engagement signals.

It is worth reviewing this periodically. Lists grow, offers change and a workflow that once felt simple can collect unnecessary steps. Removing friction is often as valuable as adding a new feature.

05

Read several signals together

Delivery, bounces, clicks, conversions, unsubscribes and complaints tell different parts of the story. Trends across several sends are usually more useful than reacting to one campaign in isolation.
